Viola Davis showed that she meant serious business when she stole a win at the Critics’ Choice Awards from Meryl Streep, and a few weeks later infamously did the same at the SAG Awards, delivering a stirring acceptance speech in the process, that included the powerful mantra ‘Dream big and dream fierce’. Now the multiple Tony Award-winning actress has ensured her place as the clear favourite to win ‘Best Actress’ at this year’s Oscars for her heart-wrenching performance in ‘The Help‘, which would make her only the second African-American actress to do so in the 83-year history of the awards.
The 46-year-old celebrates black beauty, with her natural short nappy hair and sensual dark complexion, on the cover of the February issue of the LA Times magazine. Photographed by Ruven Afanador, Viola dons a Marchesa longsleeve high-neck re-embroidered lace dress with organza flower shoulder detail.
Viola discusses with the magazine how it is like to be an actress of colour in Hollywood.
“That really is our plight, especially as women of color. You can have all the training in the world, come from a respectable background and yet never get that big opportunity that breaks you out — Never… You can be in the business for 23 years, which I have been, and suddenly something happens that wakes people up. For me, that was being in a movie [Doubt] with Meryl Streep, Amy Adams and Philip Seymour Hoffman. It makes people realize you’re there. Otherwise you’re that black girl who had a guest or costar role in a TV show here or there”, Viola points out to the LA Times.

The 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were held last night (29 January) at the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles. While ‘The Help‘ was the big winner of the night, it was French actor Jean Dujardin who stole the show, snatching ‘Best Actor’ right under Hollywood heartthrob George Clooney‘s nose and for the first time, this award season, creating a competitive Oscar race in the category. Clooney’s good friend Viola Davis took home ‘Best Actress’, and having won under the same category a few week ago at the Critics Choice Awards, the 46-year-old becomes the clear front-runner for the Oscar race in the category. Davis’ biggest threat comes from two of The Weinstein Company’s lovely ladies, Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams, who both won a Golden Globe two weeks ago for ‘Best Actress Drama’ and ‘Best Actress Comedy/Musical’, respectively.
Head below for all the red carpet action, where no one really stunned. They all played it safe.

The crème de la crème of Tinseltown came out in huge numbers last night (15 January), in celebration of the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California. The Oscar race for ‘Best Actress’ got interesting and more intense on the night, with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) awarding Michelle Williams ‘Best Actress Musical/Comedy’ and Meryl Streep ‘Best Actress Drama’. The two lovely ladies were of course bested by ‘The Help‘ star Viola Davis at the Critics Choice Awards a few days ago. However, if there is one thing the HFPA and Broadcast Film Critics Association agree on is that George Clooney, Octavia Spencer and ‘The Artist‘ should win ‘Best Actor’, ‘Best Supporting Actress’ and ‘Best Picture’ respectively.
Now to the more exciting stuff. Checkout who wore what at the event:

Promoting their latest movie ‘Another Happy Day’, two of Hollywood’s most powerful actresses Demi Moore and Ellen Barkin partner for the cover of the November issue of Gotham magazine.
The two lovely ladies are interviewed by the writer and director of the movie Sam Levinson for the magazine. The trio talk about women allowing themselves to be portrayed as little girls in movies in the last 10 years, compared to the formidable characters Demi and Ellen played in the 80s and 90s.
“It’s an industry, like most, that is dominated by men. Men in general are fearful of strong women, so they don’t necessarily want to see them on the movie screen”, Ellen points out.
Demi further adds, “The truth is that the little girl exists in all women, so it should have as much permission as the woman who is strong and independent. The little girl doesn’t necessarily mean she has to be weak, it’s just an aspect. It’s just when that aspect becomes the entire story…”
Checkout Demi and Ellen’s dark and mysterious editorial with the magazine, photographed by Brian Bowen Smith, below:
