Eminem, Lil Wayne And Keith Richards: GQ Gods Of Rock

Recently 39-year-old Eminem with fellow rapper Lil Wayne and The Rolling Stones lead guitarist Keith Richards are dubbed ‘Gods of Rock’ on the cover of the November Music Issue of US GQ magazine.

Photographed by Mark Seliger, the trio are featured in the magazine’s ‘Survivors’ issue, that profiles 43 other great musicians that have conquered obstacles during their career and managed to come out better than ever. Other acts starring in the issue include queen of neo-soul Erykah Badu, rocker Iggy Pop, Blondie lead vocalist Debbie Harry and The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers.

Eminem opens up to the magazine about his 2005 stint in rehab.

“Every addict in rehab feels like everyone’s staring at them. With me? Everyone was staring at me. I could never be comfortable. There were people there that treated me normal. Then there were a bunch of fucking idiots who aren’t even concentrating on their own sobriety because they’re so worried about mine. They’re stealing my hats, my books — it was chaos. Everything was drama in there. And at the time, I didn’t really want to get clean. Everybody else wanted me to. And anyone will tell you: If you’re not ready, nothing is going to change you. Love, nothing”, Eminem explains to GQ.

Britney Spears show some love to the gay community

Britney Spears is showing love to the gay community in the April issue of Out magazine. The “Ladies We Love” issue of the popular gay magazine will be published in a duel cover format, featuring the Princess of Pop herself Miss Spears, and Her Majesty Queen of Pop Madonna.

While Britney’s photo-spread and e-mail conducted interview with the magazine was made available online today, we are going to have to wait until Monday, 14 March, to see Madonna’s feature.

Spears teamed up with photographer Ruven Afanador for her ferocious, sex appeal filled shoot. Afanador showcased Britney’s sultry side throughout the pages of the magazine – though I doubt it was a mission.

For the cover-shot, a close-up head-and-shoulder shot shows Britney with her fingers in mouth while posing sexily. Probably the most daring pose Britney struts for the magazine is an acrobatic style pose, in which the singer is seen sitting down and simultaneously stretching her one leg 180 degrees in the air, wearing thong leotards.

In another photo Britney, again wearing leotards, showcases two of her tattoos positioned on either sides of her upper-thighs. A coy looking Britney is also photographed standing next to a wall wearing an opened trench, with her bra and panties showing.

The singer answers some of the questions we have been dying to get answered over the years. When asked whose career did she want to mold herself after when she started out, she replies “Madonna. No question. She is an amazing entertainer”.

She also reveals that she listens to a lot of Lady Gaga and Rihanna, she’s even quoted as saying “Rihanna’s ‘S & M’ is awesome”. She adds that if there was one song she wished to have recorded in the last 10 years it will have to be Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie”.

Britney describes Betty White as her favourite Golden Girl because “She’s so sweet and innocent”. Furthermore, she says fellow covergirl Madonna is “Cool”, Lady Gaga is “Unique” and onetime arch-rival Christina Aguilera is “Truly Talented”.

Dr Dre goes sentimental for I Need a Doctor

Eminem raps his mentor Dr.Dre back to life

Eminem raps his mentor Dr.Dre back to life

The music video for Dr. Dre’s second single “I Need A Doctor” from his much awaited third studio album “Detox”, which features his protege Eminem and vocals by Skylar Grey is here.

I think we all kind of expected it, but what a dark video. It’s fitting though, as it goes with the dark mood of the song itself.

A montage of Dre’s music career photographs and video footages seen throughout the video works really well with the theme of the video as the Detroit rapper lies in a hospital bed fighting for his life after a tragic car accident that occurs at the beginning of the video. For one the montage can be interpreted as Dre’s life flashing before his eyes, but at the same time evoke a strong feeling of nostalgia in the viewer.

Slim Shady is just Slim Shady at his best as he rap his heart out to heal Dre’s injured wounds and bring him back to life. In the end Dre is brought back to life and spit out his verse.

However, it is a little disappointing that we only get a Skylar Grey sighting in a very small role as one of the doctors treating Dre and she doesn’t even sing her verse.

I would have preferred it if she portrayed the angel that pops up everytime the chorus comes up, mouthing Grey’s part. But then again I guess not since the singer is said to not want to be viewed as a sex symbol. That angel streak some sexy poses, not angelic at all.

The video can be seen as a tribute to Dre’s son, Andre Dr., who tragically died in 2008 and his late N.W.A partner Eric “Eazy-E” Wright, who died of AIDS in 1995. At the end of the video the rapper is seen standing over Eazy-E’s grave. RIP

Meet the breakthrough artist of 2011

For the last couple of months we’ve been slowly hearing the name Skylar Grey and she has slightly being grabbing our attention with her sultry vocals, especially after she lent her vocals on Diddy Dirty Money’s “Coming Home”. But it wasn’t until she emerged out of no way during Eminem’s Grammy medley, muttering the words “I’m about to lose my mind”, that she commanded our full attention.

Grey is no new kid on the block, she has previously released an album under the alias Holly Brook in 2006 called “Like Blood Like Honey” and also featured on Fort Minor’s “Where’d You Go”. During this period of her life Grey was signed onto Linkin Park’s record label Machine Shop Recordings.

However, this newly 25-year-old decided to ditch her old moniker for Skylar Grey. She recently explained to Entertainment Weekly (EW) in details the concept behind her name change. She states that first of all grey is her favourite colour, but the meaning goes deeper than that. Grey points out that she was going through a hard time a few years back emotionally, unsure of where she was headed with her life, and feeling like she needed to simplify it a bit.

“One of the things that I thought might help, is if I went into my closet and threw out everything with color in it. So, I did that. I went in and I threw out everything that had any bit of colour in it, even brown. I just threw it away. I was left with grey, black, and white” Grey tells EW.

“And it really simplified my life. I didn’t have to think about what I had to wear everyday because everything matched”.

Grey who currently resides in Oregon further explains that her new hometown is the inspiration behind her first name Skylar. Grey says she’s not a fan of sunny weathers and Oregon has a very rainy climate. So when her manager suggested the name Skylar to her, it just felt right.

Grey debuted her new stage name on Diddy’s “Coming Home” late last year, which was followed by her lending her vocals on Lupe Fiasco’s “Words I Never Said” and Dr. Dre’s “I Need a Doctor”.

Grey is not just a gifted singer, but is also a talented songwriter. She wrote Rihanna’s anthemic chorus in “Love the Way You Lie”, for which she accomplished the coveted feat of being nominated for two Grammys this year. She has also written all of her verses in Coming Home, I Need a Doctor and Words I Never Said. Grey also wrote T.I. and Christina Aguilera’s song “Castle Walls”.

She is currently working on her upcoming album set to be released later this year with producer Alex da Kid, who recently worked with Avril Lavigne.

Judging by her eclectic sound and exceptional song writing skills, Skylar Grey is a name we are going to be hearing a lot of this year. Her ‘dark-girl’ image is a breath of fresh air from the gaudy female acts – such as Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Ke$ha – which we have been seeing a lot of lately.

“I’m not a big fan of trying to be a sex symbol or any of that stuff because I really like the music to speak for itself”, Grey says.

If Britney Spears is the comeback kid on 2011, Lady Gaga the top diva of the year and Adele the not-to-miss act of 2011, then it is only appropriate that Skylar Grey be the breakthrough artist of the year.
