The music video for Dr. Dre’s second single “I Need A Doctor” from his much awaited third studio album “Detox”, which features his protege Eminem and vocals by Skylar Grey is here.
I think we all kind of expected it, but what a dark video. It’s fitting though, as it goes with the dark mood of the song itself.
A montage of Dre’s music career photographs and video footages seen throughout the video works really well with the theme of the video as the Detroit rapper lies in a hospital bed fighting for his life after a tragic car accident that occurs at the beginning of the video. For one the montage can be interpreted as Dre’s life flashing before his eyes, but at the same time evoke a strong feeling of nostalgia in the viewer.
Slim Shady is just Slim Shady at his best as he rap his heart out to heal Dre’s injured wounds and bring him back to life. In the end Dre is brought back to life and spit out his verse.
However, it is a little disappointing that we only get a Skylar Grey sighting in a very small role as one of the doctors treating Dre and she doesn’t even sing her verse.
I would have preferred it if she portrayed the angel that pops up everytime the chorus comes up, mouthing Grey’s part. But then again I guess not since the singer is said to not want to be viewed as a sex symbol. That angel streak some sexy poses, not angelic at all.
The video can be seen as a tribute to Dre’s son, Andre Dr., who tragically died in 2008 and his late N.W.A partner Eric “Eazy-E” Wright, who died of AIDS in 1995. At the end of the video the rapper is seen standing over Eazy-E’s grave. RIP
